Studying the Psalms

Studying the Psalms this Lent

Dear friends,

The psalms are one of the treasures of our faith. These ancient poems and songs can help to shape our praying, inviting us to bring the fullness of our lives and our experiences before God.

We’ll be paying particular attention to the psalms as a resource for prayer in worship this Lent, and we’ll also be exploring this theme in small group gatherings. These groups will be reading and discussing portions of Getting Involved with God: Rediscovering the Old Testamentby Ellen Davis. Davis’s book–a favorite of mine for many years–has chapters on lots of biblical themes, including several on the psalms. These chapters will offer us an opportunity to explore a wide range of voices–thanksgiving, lament, praise, confession–and reflect together on how these ancient words might inform our praying today.

Groups will meet weekly at a variety of times, based on participants’ availability, mostly online via Zoom. Copies of the book are available from the church office for Chf 15 if you wish. Sign up now if you’d like to join a group:

I hope you’ll consider joining a study group this Lent–it’s a wonderful way to deepen the experience of this season together. Groups will start meeting the week of 18 February. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Peace,
Andy
