marco’s awakening: 2019 & 2025
It has taken several years to overcome the traumas and to calmly reflect and write. The initial intention (2016-2019) was to publish in physical book form; but now realize that an on-line version is easier to organize and to distribute.
‘Marco’s story’ is one that needs to be told and I thank those who have given us the encouragement and motivation to finalize it.
It is published here on our church site as this contributed “article”.
Fundamentally, it is a late-in-life ‘coming out’ experience. However, ‘coming out’ is not an event, it is an internal struggle to come to acceptance and then a whole long period of learning to live anew, with oneself, with others both gay and straight, within our social structure close to us, and a whole world of prejudgements and prejudices. There is no doubt that this place, my church, has made the difference between my crawling into a hole to disappear, and being out and proud and a very grateful lover of life. In the book I acknowledge extensively my appreciation, as I also question some aspects of church and religion in general.
