In Remembrance of Her – A Presentation by Nyambura Njoroge
Earlier this year, our own Rev. Dr. Nyambura Njoroge published a new book
entitled In Remembrance of Her. Nyambura was the first woman ordained by the
Presbyterian Church of East Africa, and the book, written to mark the 40 th
anniversary of that event, draws on her personal story and the rich story of
faith and witness by women in her church more broadly.
The ordination of women in most denominations has not been an easy integration and the story of the mothers, wives and daughters of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa, is no exception. It is the persistence of these women in co-creating the story of humanity, which is explicably joined to Kenya’s struggle for political independence, which truly deserves to be researched, documented and shared widely for the glory of God.
This book brings to light the author’s life story of faith, courage and foresight as she follows in the footsteps of her foremothers and emulates those who claimed their dignity, freedom, selfhood and opportunities to grow in faith against many odds. Just as the women in the Bible were not deterred from taking on powerful men in patriarchal systems, these trailblazers fought against the challenges of female genital mutilation (FGM) and other retrogressive cultural beliefs and practices and emerged undaunted.
Taken from her keynote address at the Academic Symposium hosted by Presbyterian University of East Africa, theologian and ecumenical leader, Nyambura Njororoge, sits at the feet of the pioneering women of faith within the PCEA and Woman’s Guild and celebrates their memory and legacy. This is a story which gratefully acknowledges each and every woman who persistently and unwaveringly witnessed for Christ and remade the face of a nation. This is HERstory.
